Trash : The Biggest Problem in Jakarta

(Introduction)

Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia where I live. As capital of the State, Jakarta would be a major point of doing any activity. Various problems also appear in Jakarta. One of them is trash. Trash is not a new thing for us. Junk is sort of dirt, a pile of waste, collection of various objects that have been discarded.

(Problems)
Trash is one of the many social problems facing the people of Jakarta. According to Kompas.com on January 8th, 2016 explains that the problems of the most complained resident of Jakarta is the waste problem. Trash problems accounting for 24.1% of other problems in Jakarta such as congestion, floods, and fires, each of which only 7.4%, 4.5 % and 1.5%. Trash certainly caused by human beings themselves. The influence of the environment is a major factor in the emergence of a behavior. For example, environmental influences such as littering will be a major factor in the emergence of the behavior of littering. Trash can cause other problems. For example trash can bring disastrous consequences for public health if they are not insurmountable. If the waste is disposed or stacked haphazardly without proper management, it will cause a variety of health problems that occur in communities like diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid. Trash can also cause global warming because the waste can produce methane (CH4), which can damage the Earth's atmosphere. Besides, waste dumped carelessly, one of which is discharged into rivers or other waterways over time will accumulate and block the flow of water, so water cannot flow smoothly and will overflow causing flooding. Because of it, we as the members of Indonesia must doing something to solve that problems.

(Solutions)
To solve the problems of trash in Jakarta, we have many solutions like make a garbage bank, 4R (reuse, reduce, recycle, and replace), grouping the trash. For instance, in my hometown, there is an organization called the garbage bank. The purpose of waste bank is to reduce waste by saving garbage. When we save the garbage there, the garbage will be turn into a money. Then the garbage man will take it and pay with a rather expensive price. The rest will be given to people who saved up garbage in the garbage bank. We can also apply the 4R which are reuse, reduce, recycle and replace. Reuse, reduce and recycle means that to reuse waste that has been used to create other useful items like crafts, reduce the consumption of somethings so the waste will be reduced as well, and process waste into useful new items. Replace means that replace the items  that are not durable and can produce a lot of trash into a items that is durable. For example you should replace the glass cup into the plastic cup to avoid when the cup is broken. And the last but not least, we must grouping the trash into the right group like organic trash, inorganic trash, etc. All of the society must be participate to solve this problems. For example, the family must teach the members of family itself to do not littering, the society have to pay attention to grouping the  trash into the right group, and the government need to make a garbage bank and make a socialization about the 4R (reduce, reuse, recycle and replace).

(Conclusion)
In conclusion, trash is a problem that we need to tackle together with implementing solutions above. not only the government, but start from ourselves. Everyone should be aware of the impact from the garbage itself. Let's make the environment where you live into a healthy, comfortable, and beautiful to dispose of waste in place.

  4. Hi Gloria,
trash might seem like a negligible matter but in fact, it is not one. If this matter happens continuously, it'll eventually lead to several problems which can potentially give impact to the people's health and hurt the city. I like your article, really. It's easy to read and understand. But I have a suggestion for you. I think the word 'facing' in 'facing the people of Jakarta.' should be 'faced by the ...' Thank you. ^^

  8. wow it is a very critical essay
you are so cool in writing ;)
    But according to me
it will be greater if you change"The trash would be sold to a garbage man with a rather expensive price" become
"then the garbage man will take it and pay with a rather expensive price"
